About Me

Cheers! I'm Sophie, the face behind Sophie Cargill Ceramics. I'm a full-time potter and artist living and working in Athens, Georgia, the city where I got my undergrad degree and now live with my husband and two cats. I've been an artist my whole life, but my primary medium was painting before I came to college at the University of Georgia and fell in love with ceramics.

I've been making pottery since 2017, and making a living doing what I love since 2021. I currently work out of Southern Star Studio, a woman-owned ceramics collective where I've held the position of Studio Manager to a group of wonderful artists. I sell my work in Southern Star's gallery, at local markets and festivals, and online. Until 2024, I worked under the name Sophie Shannon Art, and have since rebranded to create a business that feels more authentic to who I've become.

I make one-of-a-kind porcelain pots that are hand-painted, carved, and glazed. Each piece is a unique labor of love that spends hours in my hands by the time it's pulled from the kiln. I'm passionate about merging elements of fine art into the rich craft tradition of pottery, and making things that feel both sacred and approachable in daily routine.

Recently, I’ve started incorporating more of my interests in TTRPGs, gaming, and fantasy into my artwork alongside new mediums like block printing and sewing. It’s been a joy to sink deeper into a community that loves these things as much as I do, and it’s brought a breath of fresh air into my studio practice and my motivation to make new work.

No matter how or when or why you found me, I’d invite you to gather round the table, and let me be the first to raise a glass (or mug) to you to say thank you for being here and for continuing to support someone like me.

I’m really happy you’re here.
